Crystal Pier, Pacific Beach

Just 10 miles north of San Diego, Pacific Beach (or PB to locals) is the quintessential Southern California beach. This is a complete party beach town and attracts many college students from the area who come for the night clubs and beach volleyball. With its shack-like eateries, bars, and various other things to buy and participate in, Pacific Beach really makes you feel like a laid-back San Diegan who lives on the beach. Many of the homes that line the boardwalk are for rental and not very extravagant, but the people who rent them out are always lounging on their porches in swim suits with beers in their hands and their stereos playing a beachy tune that sets the mood. Casual bikers, skateboarders, and roller-bladers weave around the people walking on the boardwalk, and you can rent one yourself – along withs surfboards, wetsuits, body boards, and various other beach fun – from the various shops.

North of the pier is a more relaxed atmosphere more suited to families, and holds Tourmaline Surfing Park. PB is another prime surf spot and, being the quintessential Southern California beach, attracts typical California surfers. Whether you are a casual beginner or a seasoned pro, this is probably a good place to go for atmosphere and waves.

This is another fishing pier, and there is an ongoing debate on whether or not you need a license, so bring one just to be safe. But that is not the most unique thing about it. If you come to Crystal Pier, you will immediately notice the cottages that line the sides, and you’ll probably be surprised that this old wooden pier can hold all those cars! These cottages are the Crystal Pier Hotel, and they are probably the most convenient hotel rooms on any beach. Your car is parked right in front of your door, but you probably won’t want to go anywhere! With the sandy beach right under you and the view of the waves and liveliness of PB, you’ll probably be able to walk – or rent a bike – to wherever you want to go.
